Getting tired of work? It's time to take a day off and get some rest. Happy Labor Day from Projectmates to you! As we are celebrating Labor Day right now, did you know that most other countries around the world celebrate their Labor Day on the First of May which is also called May Day?
May Day is originally an ancient spring holiday for cultures in Europe and North America. In the late 19th century, it was chosen to become the International Workers' Day, which is also referred to as Labor Day.
The traditional May Day celebration involves lots of singing and treats as part of the holiday. People danced around the maypole and crowned the Queen of May. Other regions celebrate May Day by making a 'May Basket' filled with sweets or flowers and leave it on neighbors' doorsteps anonymously.
The association with May Day and labor rights began in the United States starting in the early 19th century. In the 19th Century, many workers were suffering from long work hours and poor conditions. This culminated in creating the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, later to be known as the American Federation of Labor, and gave birth to the 8-hour working day known by many today.
May Day is officially celebrated as a holiday in over 66 counties and unofficially celebrated in many more. After the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland officially made Labor Day a U.S. celebration.
For the International Workers' Day nowadays, people tend to celebrate the first day of summer and can enjoy time with family and friends. They'll organize picnics and barbecues, or even plan a trip to the beach-side. In Russia, they even have parades to celebrate this national holiday.
Presently back in the US, Labor Day is associated with the end of summer, which implies that students need to go back to school, thus forcing parents from around the nation to plan shopping for back-to-school items.
On the other hand, if you don't have to worry about getting your kids in gear for going back to school, it's a very good time to consider streamlining your project management workflow processes for the next Labor Day holiday!
